On February 4 2004 was created in Madrid the Iberian American alliance Affinitas, promoted by the Spanish law firm Garrigues Abogados y Asesores Tributários. The law firms who have also taken part in the creation of the alliance are Barbosa, Müssnich & Aragão Advogados (Brazil), Bruchou, Fernández Madero, Lombardi & Mitrani Abogados (Argentina), Mijares, Angoitia, Cortés y Fuentes S.C. (Mexico) and Garrigues, Leónidas, Matos S.C. (Portugal). On 2005 was approved the inclusion of the offices Barros & Errázuriz (Chile), Gómez-Pinzón Zuleta Abogados (Colombia) and Miranda e Amado Abogados (Peru). Affinitas has nowadays 39 offices over 15 countries, including the new Garrigues offices in Shangai (China), Casablanca (Morroco) and Varsovia (Poland).

All firms in the alliance are solidly established in their markets and have taken part in important and innovative transactions in recent years.

The constitution agreement was signed by the managing partners of all the member firms of the new alliance, which was created with the objective to offer to its clients a high-quality and consistent service. In this way, clients will receive seamless legal service, regardless of the country in which the client is located, as it was provided by only one office.

To obtain the objective of high-quality seamless service, the members of the alliance have entered into a close strategic agreement which will allow them to establish consistent criteria for the services offered by all allied firms. Under the agreement, the member firms will:

  • Work in teams on matters that involve more than one jurisdiction, to ensure that the client receives consistent service.
  • Share know-how in their various areas of specialization, both legal and tax, in order to attain the highest level of quality and professionalism in the services they provide.
  • Make investments to standardize their technological systems and other production tools.
  • Share their selection, recruitment and professional development methods and promote exchanges of professionals between the firms in the alliance, with a view to ensuring that all firms adopt the same habits and methods in the provision of services.
  • Adopt identical quality control methods.
